What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of over 100 active compounds found in both the hemp and marijuana plant. Most people are well aware of the THC in marijuana; but only recently has CBD become part of popular culture. CBD can be extracted from either source using multiple processes and which method is used can not only affect the quality of the CBD molecule, but can also determine how much THC is extracted.

There are receptors that the CBD binds to throughout your body.

There are three types of CBD: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum and Isolate. Isolate is considered 99% pure and through the extraction process, everything from the plant is removed. This includes traces of THC, terpenes, waxes, oils, etc. Full-spectrum CBD contains everything from the plant, including terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids, etc. All of these elements work together to help give CBD oil its therapeutic effects. Broad spectrum CBD is just full-spectrum, but without the THC. This allows you to have all the benefits of the additional elements, with as little as THC as possible.

What Is The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

CBD binds to receptors in the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS system has receptors throughout your body, mostly concentrated in the nervous system, immune system and digestive tract. The ECS system is a collection of receptors and neurotransmitters that work to keep your body in homeostasis (Your body’s normal healthy working condition). Our body naturally produces Endocannabinoids that work to keep our body in a healthy balance. Our body works hard to create these natural endocannabinoids, but if you are lacking certain building blocks the system will not function properly.

How Do I Keep My ECS Balanced?

Your ECS is like any other system in your body, if given the proper building blocks and a chance to do what it is meant to do- it will create tremendous benefits for you! Just like any other system, sometimes it gets off balance due to multiple factors. The two most important factors that can determine if your ECS will function properly are the status of your Micronutrients and Omega levels. When these two systems are out of order, your body’s natural ECS system and Endocannabinoid production will suffer. Omega fats are part of the building blocks for the natural CBD your body produces, and if you are deficient, you will not produce natural CBD to unlock the amazing benefits of your ECS system.

We recommend to our patients that if they have been taking CBD and have not noticed much benefit, that we check the status of the micronutrients and Omega levels.

Does My CBD Contain THC?

Most commercially available CBD preparations that are available without a medical marijuana card, will have either <0.3% or <0.1% THC. Although companies claim their CBD does not contain any THC and that can be verified through chemical testing, it is impossible to say your CBD is 100% THC free. If you are worried about any drug testing from your employer, it is wise to check with your healthcare provider to discuss the possibility of having a positive drug screen. If well-sourced and legitimate CBD products are used the chances are very low; but it is still a possibility.
